GUN VIOLENCE IN U.S. IS A PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS.(MAIN)

Byline: ARTHUR LEVITT Troy

It is true that the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights reads, ``A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.''

But this amendment was written 200 years ago. At that time, we had no local police, no state police, no army. The country was largely wild and a well-armed populace was necessary for security.

But things have changed, and gun lovers are certainly not concerned with what guns are doing to the moral integrity of the country.

We are reaching a point where we seem to be glorifying violence. It fills our …

Virginia Considers Building CU House In Richmond.

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- In an effort to heighten its presence with lawmakers, the Virginia Credit Union League has formed a task force to examine the details of building its own Credit Union House similar to CUNA's in Washington D.C.

"We're looking at the concept. We think that concept has worked extremely well," said Rick Pillow, CEO of the Virginia league.

Pillow said a CU house in Richmond will further the interests of Virginia credit unions by providing a meeting place to speak with legislators or provide a place to plan and organize. Pillow also said a CU house is simply a good place for credit union-minded people to get together for work or social events. …

"IT is a truth universally acknowledged, that a man in possession of a good fortune must want to move to a higher storey in his office building, and thus ensure an even more excellent fortune."

So did Jane Austen memorably describe the architecture of management in her classic, Pride and Avarice. As a scion of English landed money, she knew the value of elevation.

They sat on horses on hilltops while the hoi polloi marched - in step and in close order - towards enemy fire. It must have looked impressive. As men fell before withering fusillades, the survivors closed ranks and marched on.

One of the secrets behind making this sound man management work was to ensure there were …

VIOLINIST EANET TAKES THE REINS OF JULLIARD QUARTET.(Main)

PITTSFIELDS, Mass. - The young guy took charge, or at least he took his seat for the first time.

It's always tricky watching for leadership among chamber musicians since they communicate with the smallest of gestures and briefest moments of eye contact. But at South Mountain Concerts on Sunday afternoon there was nothing subtle about the presence of Nick Eanet, who was making his debut as first violinist of the venerable Juilliard String Quartet. A youthful 37-years-old, Eanet is clearly being handed the reins of the quartet, whose other members are grey headed and a bit stooped.

The three works on Sunday's program were all staples of the repertoire, but …

FRESNO, Calif. -- Maybe it was too late for marriage counseling.

Clover Dew Cookies Owners Know Recipe for Growth

PRINCETON - Karen Heeter said she has never been in the baking business before.

But the cookies she made and distributed throughout the community and the ensuing popularity could indicate differently.

Heeter and her husband, Bill, moved to the Princeton area from New York approximately five years ago. It was a drastic change for the couple. But among the things they brought with them were family recipes, which, when mixed with a desire to start a cookie business, resulted in Clover Dew Cookie Creations, which is based out of their home on Clover Dew Dairy Road.

The Heeters originally are from Pennsylvania and lived in New York for 15 years. She transferred to West Virginia with her job at a large company, where she handled accounting responsibilities for eight corporations.

West Virginia obviously was a rural transition, but she admits she likes it here "because it is simple and quiet."

Heeter's husband followed her to West Virginia six months later.

"I finally found this house after looking at numerous houses," she said. "So it was a little scary living here by myself, not knowing anyone. And it was in the winter."

Her initial fear of the move would soon be replaced, however, with a deep desire to pursue something she loved. Not only could Heeter enjoy a more rural lifestyle living in the country, she could fill her free time with baking family recipes and promoting her product while getting to know people throughout her community.

"You work so hard," she said. "But you pour your own talents into your own success."

The Heeters began researching the cookie business by purchasing cookies "from everywhere," she said. Most of the cookies they purchased were through the Internet.

Just about every cookie they tasted did not meet their standards of what a good cookie should be. So, they started their business in 2008.

"So that's where it all started," said Heeter, smiling. "I bake at night, and I bake on weekends. I'm the baker; he (does) the packaging.

"Sometimes he helps with scooping," she added, looking at her husband. "We're very supportive of each other. We look at each other and say, 'Okay, how many are we going to cook tonight?' And he helps with the marketing end."

When it came to starting her business from scratch, Heeter said she did not encounter many challenges.

"That wasn't hard for me," she said. "I did everything online - setting up with the West Virginia Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture. All labels had to be approved. I did all of it basically, online, to be honest with you."

Once the paperwork was in place, she simply did what she does best: bake cookies.

The couple transformed the upper-level of their new home to a kitchen where they have spent many late hours mixing ingredients, stirring and baking cookies, as well as packaging them.

"My recipes mostly come from family," Heeter continued, noting that the recipe for her most popular cookie - Grammy's Ginger Molasses - comes from her mother-in-law.

Her cookies contain no preservatives or additives.

Currently, she bakes seven types of cookies but adds three additional recipes to her selection during the holidays.

Baker's choice, snickerdoodle, chocolate chip, ginger molasses, oatmeal raisin, peanut butter and white chocolate macadamia nut are her staple cookies.

She said the additional three recipes include a double-fudge chocolate nut cookie, a lemon cashew shortbread cookie and a chocolate toffee cookie.

"The lemon cashew is a very delicate cookie and doesn't ship," Heeter explained. "The double fudge will not ship during the summer because it is full of chocolate."

Acknowledging that she had never before been in the baking or cooking business, Heeter said she was "overwhelmed" by business her first Christmas. Her second Christmas was much better, and this past Christmas she received more than 400 dozen orders.

The majority of her Christmas business this year was through corporations who purchased cookies as gifts for clients.

Locally, she added, their cookie business is "going very well."

"That's who supports us - more than the Internet," she said.

News of her growing business has spread simply through "word-of-mouth," she said.

The company also advertises through radio giveaways as well as offering free samples during functions such as county fairs, festivals and expos.

Valentine's Day and Mother's Day are additionally busy times for the entrepreneur.

"I take a challenge," she said. "To me it is like an adventure. Some way or another I'll figure it out."

Heeter said she was scheduled to appear on CBS's Rachael Ray show last fall, but producers canceled all segments of "Snack of the Day."

"When people try our cookies, they are quiet; they just savor the taste."

Are You Targeting The Hispanic Market? Here's Why That Strategy Isn't Working.

PONTE VEDRA, Fla. -- Does your credit union have a strategy for marketing to Hispanics? That may be your problem right there.

One expert who not only leads a banking unit targeted at the Latino community but who has also been a consultant to banks entering the market, cautioned financial institutions to recognize the Hispanic market is no more homogenous than any other market within the U.S.

Luz Lopez Urrutia, CEO of Banuestra Financial Corp., told the Retail Financial Services Symposium hosted by SourceMedia, parent to Credit Unoin Journal, that mistake No. 1 for many banks and CUs is taking their current product and service set, translating brochures into Spanish and hiring Spanish-speaking employees, and believing the job is done. Banuestra has 30,000 customers and is part of a 12-branch network branded separately and currently owned by Peoples Bank of Georgia. The unit has seen 30% year-over-year, same-store growth.

That financials are chasing Hispanics is no surprise. Lopez Urritia noted there are 42.7-million Hispanics in the U.S. as of 2005 Census data, with projections that figure will grow to 100-million over the next 45 years. What many in that target market are missing, she said, is the traditional documentation that is the core of any credit report.

Hispanics do not trust banks due to longstanding problems in their respective home countries. I did not trust the banks when I came to this country 22 years ago, she said, adding that about one-third of these consumers cannot read or write Spanish, and 75% or 80% cannot read, write or speak English. But this is a hardworking segment who are upwardly mobile, and they are savers, she said.

Lopez Urrutia said the Hispanic market has six distinct segments:

1) New Arrivals, who are often in U.S. three years or less, have a wife and kids in Mexico, work in construction, and live in an apartment with five to seven people

2) Settled Worker. In the U.S. for longer period, gets paid with W2. Has a banking account, but gets all of her services at a check casher.

3) Established Family. Children in U.S., but dont believe banks understand their needs, and even though they may have a free checking account at an FI, dont believe bank has products for them.

4) Jeffs (Supervisor or the boss). Has bank account, but is often undocumented. Saving money for own business. Uses check cashers.

5) Latino Small Business. Owns business. Has wife and kids in U.S. Has both a personal and commercial account with a mainstream bank.

6) Latino-Americans. Fully aculturated individual. I am part of mainstream, will tell you I still use phone cards and send money to my family in Mexico, said Lopez Urrutia. They are mostly U.S. citiziens, but there are still customs relative to financial services that we retain from our home countries.

Its important prior to serving Latino market to decide which segments of the market it wants to serve, she continued. Most banks well suited for segments 5 and 6. These consumers behave like a traditional banking customer. All of 1-3, and some of segment 4, need a different product set and different customer service model. Believe me, they can be profitable, and they are loyal and will stick with you.

What banks and credit unions must recognize, stressed Lopez Urrutia, is that the Latino consumer doesnt have the traditional credit score or a bank account with a lot of activity to show incoming and outgoing cash flow. Many Hispanics are looking for microloans of less than $1,000, a market in which many banks arent interested.

They dont have a payment history, but they do have good credit, she said. They do have documentation and represent excellent long-term relationships.

Although her company is a bank, Lopez Urrutia said, At Banuestra we turn the customer into a member. For the Latino consumer to have a membership card with a picture is very, very important. It gives us a sense of inclusion. As FIs, it gives us the chance to go through all the regulatory compliance steps. Once we have that member, we can offer all the different services we can offer the customer. We look at check-cashing activity so we can validate employment. While were building a relationship with this customer, getting them into doing transactions on a frequent basis, we are earning ancillary income from the relationship.

Toys target the faithful

BOSTON -- The "crazy, crazy Jewish fun" of Kosherland looks a lotlike the board game Candy Land, except gefilte fishing substitutesfor visits to the Ice Cream Sea.

In Catholic-opoly, like Monopoly, the job is to bankrupt youropponents. The difference is it's done "in a nice, fun way."

And role-playing can get pretty realistic with the BiblicalAction Figure of Job, which comes complete with boils.

The market for religious board games and toys like these is tinyand a bit quirky. But sales numbers indicate demand is growing asfamilies demand wholesome entertainment, selections expand and theInternet gives greater access to retailers.

Abe Blumberger of Jewish Educational Toys said people are muchmore willing to buy religious toys since he helped create Kosherlandin 1985. His game is now offered on UrbanOutfitters.com.

"I think there's a recognition there's a small niche out there,"Blumberger said.

The games and toys cover a variety of faiths, from Islam toMormonism, and include Risk-style games such as Missionary Conquestand talking plush dolls, including the smiling and sneaker-wearingPray-With-Me-Mantis.

In the Muslim "Race to the Kabah," players advance by learningthe meaning of the 99 names of Allah. Kosherland teaches aboutJewish dietary laws, requiring, for instance, that players movebackward if they mix milk with meat. In the Mormon game Mortality, good decisions help a player acquire "testimonies," which strengthenhis faith and help him endure life's trials.

Statistics on sales of religious games are hard to find. However, retail sales of inspirational gifts and merchandise, which includesreligious toys and games, were an estimated $1.9 billion in 2005, an11.8 percent increase from the previous year, according to an Aprilreport by Packaged Facts, the publishing arm of MarketResearch.com.

The report projected 26.3 percent growth to $2.4 billion in salesin the gifts and merchandise sector by 2010.

Rebecca Sachs Norris of Merrimack College in North Andover andNikki Bado-Fralick of Iowa State University co-authored a paper onreligious games and toys, which they say can be a powerful part ofinstilling values.

But they also worry about whether children can handle some of themore serious and complex messages the games try to send.

"These aren't trivial," Norris said. "They really aren't."

In some games, for instance, the losers don't reach enlightenmentor Heaven, Norris said. Missionary Conquest awards extra points toplayers who are martyred by stoning as they try to establishmissions in the Middle East.

Many of the games were made by people with little or no toymakingexperience who were inspired by deep religious conviction and anidea that wouldn't let go.

Cliff Rockwood of Tyngsborough developed "Holy Huggables" becausehe wanted a doll for his daughter that reflected his family'sspiritual values. Using informal gatherings with friends as marketresearch, he and his wife developed talking Esther, Moses and Jesusdolls, and have sold "tens of thousands," though Rockwood declinedto be more specific.

Thasneem Ahmed, creator of the Muslim board game "Race to theKabah," wanted to promote family life after being deeply affected bythe 1999 Columbine massacre. She paid $40,000 to produce 2,500copies herself in 2001. Last month, she sold the last game of thatbatch.

"I felt this was really important for children and families," shesaid. "That's what it came down to."

Rockwood said his dolls' sayings portray what the Bible says in away a child can understand. The popularity of Holy Huggables is moreevidence to him that manufacturers are ignoring a bigger, religious-oriented market.

"There's a population that would like to have these kind ofproducts, and no one wants to make them," he said.

That may be because retailers are just going with what they know.

According to Anita Frazier, a toy industry analyst for NPD Groupmarketing research company, the major concern of toymakers about newproducts or markets is where and how they'll distribute it. They'reoften forced to find lesser-known, alternative distributors for newproducts because mass retailers largely choose to stock theirshelves with proven brands.

Kosherland's Blumberger said his game has had short rides on theshelves of major stores, including Wal-Mart. But his hopes for amega-marketing deal for Kosherland seem slight.

"I don't think any of the other game companies have to worryabout us taking over the market share," he said.

Nationwide attacked for branch closures

Nationwide has come under fire for its decision to close allseven of its branches in south-east London. Britain's biggestbuilding society will close branches in Blackheath, Greenwich,Woolwich, Lewisham, Catford, Peckham and Elephant & Castle by theend of May.

The Labour MP for Greenwich and Woolwich, Nick Raynsford, condemned Nationwide's decision, saying the building society was"indifferent to the concerns of its customers across such a largepart of our capital city, an area with a population of almost670,000". He added: "The idea of there being no Nationwide branch inthe whole of Manchester seems absurd, yet Nationwide is denying itsbranch services to an area with a population much greater thanManchester and Sheffield."

A Nationwide spokesman said the decision was a difficult one butthe branches were "economically unsustainable". The spokesman addedthat there were still 700 branches and telephone and internetbanking service are available. Nevertheless, Nationwide's shock movewas debated in Westminster Hall last week, with the backing of south-east London MPs Heidi Alexander and Joan Ruddock.

ANZAC (CANBERRA)

Thousands of Australians have gathered to pay tribute to fallen soldiers at Anzac Dayservices and marches across the nation.

As day dawned in cities and towns, wreaths were laid by political leaders and veteransto honour those who died 88 years ago on the shores of Gallipoli and in battles since.

And dawn services will soon get under way on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey withTreasurer PETER COSTELLO, and in the Persian Gulf with Defence Minister ROBERT HILL onboard HMAS Kanimbla.

It's Australia's first Anzac Day without a Gallipoli veteran following the death ofALEC CAMPBELL last year at age 103.

In Canberra, about 20,000 people packed the National War Memorial where the servicewas attended by Governor-General PETER HOLLINGWORTH and defence chiefs.

In Sydney, thousands gathered at the Cenotaph in Martin Place, where New South WalesGovernor MARIE BASHIR laid a wreath and recited the Anzac dedication.

In Adelaide, about 2,000 people gathered at Adelaide's War Memorial, greeted by cooland clear conditions for the annual dawn service.

Organisers and regulars say it's one of the biggest crowds since the dedication ofthe memorial in 1931.

And up to 20,000 people gathered at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance for the dawn service.

Dawn services are now being followed by traditional Anzac Day marches around the nation.

Thousands are lining the streets of Sydney's CBD to cheer on war veterans and theirfamilies, while rain has failed to keep thousands from turning out to Brisbane's march.

In Sydney, the march is headed by 104-year-old World War One veteran MARCEL CAUX,who is one of only two surviving New South Wales veterans of that conflict.

It was only a few years ago that the decorated soldier admitted to his son MARCUS,who accompanied him today, that he had fought for Australia during World War One.

Anzac Costello (CANBERRA)

In Gallipoli, Treasurer PETER COSTELLO says the Turkish government and Australian authoritiesare providing tight security.

Speaking from Anzac Cove, where he will soon address the dawn service, Mr COSTELLOsays the site is heavily guarded by police and Turkish troops.

There have been warnings that terrorists are planning to attack westerners, includingAustralians at the service.

And Mr COSTELLO says Australians have been warned to be vigilant about their safety, and tough measures are in place.

Anzac Cosgrove (SYDNEY)

In the Persian Gulf, Australia's defence chief says hundreds of sailors will assembleon the flight deck of HMAS Kanimbla for a poignant memorial service.

General PETER COSGROVE, speaking from the Kanimbla, says Anzac Day will have a specialsignificance for the Australian personnel serving as part of the war on Iraq.

General COSGROVE told ABC Radio it will be the usual memorial service -- hymn singing,The Last Post and Reveille -- as the sun rises above the gulf.

Former South Australian treasurer ROB LUCAS says the state's former Liberal governmentdid all it could to reduce risks involved with the privatisation of a power station.

The current Labor government said yesterday the state's budget faces a $140 millionblowout because Flinders Osborne Trading is heading into voluntary administration.

The move comes as its US parent company NRG Energy suffers severe financial difficulty.

Mr LUCAS was a minister of the former government when it struck a deal with FlindersOsborne Trading in 1996 to sell two power stations in the state to NRG Energy.

Treasurer KEVIN FOLEY said yesterday that under a guarantee of the former Liberal government, the government became liable to pay at least $140 million.

Mr LUCAS, now the opposition's treasury spokesman, says advice to the former governmentwas that it was highly unlikely the guarantee would be called in.

Fed: Qld death raises holiday road toll to 24

SYDNEY, Dec 25 AAP - Australia's holiday road toll has climbed to 24 with four deaths
so far on Christmas Day.

An 18-month-old girl died when a car she was in crashed on the Cunningham Highway west
of Brisbane.

A 50-year-old woman later died in hospital of injuries from the same accident.

A police spokesman said the single-vehicle crash occurred about 5.15am (AEST) today
on the highway at Maryvale, 35 km east of Warwick.

Three adults travelling in the car, which was heading to Brisbane, were injured.

They were taken for treatment to Warwick Base Hospital, where the 50-year-old died
at about 11pm (AEST).

A 61-year-old man also died today when his car ran off the road at Maryborough, in
central Victoria, and hit a tree.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, at about 7.30am (AEDT), police said.

A motorist was killed in the Northern Territory's Kakadu National Park.

Police said the car rolled on the Arnhem Highway near the uranium mining town of Jabiru
about midday (CST).

No further details were available.

NSW police today said a 46-year-old man was killed yesterday when his car crashed into
a parked vehicle in Sydney's inner west at 10.45am (AEDT).

It was believed the man died of a heart attack in the accident at Fernbank Road, Marrickville,
and a coroner would investigate the death, police said.

The death brings the NSW holiday road toll to nine.

There were six deaths on NSW roads yesterday.

So far this holiday period, five people have been killed on the roads in Victoria,
five in Queensland, three in the Northern Territory and one each in Western Australia
and South Australia.

No road deaths have been recorded in Tasmania or the ACT.

Vic: Police action does not threaten public safety, says Bracks

MELBOURNE, Aug 14 AAP - Industrial action by Victoria Police, which had closed the
CBD station, was not threatening public safety, Premier Steve Bracks said today.

Three police stations were closed overnight as the first industrial action taken by
Victoria's police for 25 years moved into its second day.

"I'm advised by the police commissioner and police command that it's not affecting
the public's safety but it is inconveniencing, obviously, the police operations," Mr Bracks
told Radio 3AW.

"Police patrols are still covering areas around the state, so it's not affecting the
public's safety."

The St Kilda Road police station, which covers the central business district to East
Melbourne, was shut along with Rosebud, in Melbourne's south, and Boronia station in Melbourne's
outer east.

Union officials have demanded a wage increase of between 13 and 39 per cent to bring
Victorian police into line with NSW officers.

Police have instigated 22 work bans, including bans on one-man shifts, processing speed
and red-light camera film, transporting and dispensing medication to prisoners and communicating
via email.

Mr Bracks said if industrial action by police were to affect public safety, the government
would immediately seek the intervention of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission.

The government has increased its initial offer of a pay increase of nine per cent to
rises of 12 to 24 per cent.

Mr Bracks said the offer was final.

The Premier said he would not put a deadline today on how long the offer would remain
on the table.

"But if this (industrial action) goes on and the offer is not accepted, we'll pull
it off the table - it'll go back to nine per cent," he said.

Motorcycle accidents take national road toll to 47

The deaths of two motorcyclists in separate accidents in NSW has taken the national
road toll for the holiday period to 47.

A police spokesman says the body of a man was found about 9.30am (AEDT) lying in a
paddock at Tichborne, near Parkes, on the Newell Highway in the state's west today.

The spokesman says it appears the man, aged 20, had unsuccessfully tried to negotiate
a series of S-bends near the Tichborne railway crossing.

The rider became airborne, struck a fencepost and is believed to have been killed instantly.

The spokesman says the second motorcycle rider killed was a man, 55, from Singleton.

He says the rider lost control of his motorbike on a bend at Lake St Clair, north of
Singleton, and skidded before striking a post.

The man suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at John Hunter
Hospital at Newcastle.

The New South Wales road toll for the holiday period is now 27.

In Queensland the toll is seven, while four people have died in road accidents in Victoria,
four in South Australia, three in Western Australia, one in the Australian Capital Territory
and Tasmania one.

There have been no fatal accidents in the Northern Territory since the toll began.

WA: Racing industry teenagers jailed for gang rape

WA: Racing industry teenagers jailed for gang rape

Four teenagers associated with the West Australian racing industry have been jailed
for up to four years for what's been called a depraved repeated gang-rape of an 18-year-old
stablehand.

Two other teenagers found guilty of unlawfully detaining the woman have received intensive
community supervision orders.

In the WA District Court today, Judge MICHAEL MULLER said four of the youths -- three
of them apprentice jockeys and one a schoolboy -- had subjected the woman to a prolonged,
and humiliating series of sex attacks on May 22 last year.

The court heard the woman was lured to one of the jockey's quarters after meeting him
at McDonald's and receiving an assurance from him that nothing untoward would happen.

When she arrived at the quarters, the light was turned out and she was dragged to a
bed, stripped and held down while the assaults began.

As family and friends in the public gallery wept, the two ringleaders of the attack
-- both aged 16 at the time -- were ordered to serve minimum terms of 20 months' detention
for deprivation of liberty, aggravated indecent assault and multiple counts of aggravated
sexual penetration.

Two others have been sentenced to three years and six months, and 14 months for their
part in the attacks.

The two teenagers convicted only of deprivation of liberty received 12-month intensive
youth supervision orders.

Outside the court, the distraught father of two of the teenagers said he blamed the
racing industry for not taking better care of his sons.

WA: TLC changes name to Unions WA

PERTH, April 2 AAP - The West Australian Trades and Labor Council has changed its name
to UnionsWA in a move designed to modernise and clarify its public image.

UnionsWA secretary Tony Cooke said the newly named organisation reflected more closely
its role in representing working people.

He said the TLC suffered from a lack of clarity in its name and often received calls
from people wanting anything from the fitting of a screen door to official recognition
of overseas trade qualifications.

"UnionsWA is a more appropriate description of our core business," Mr Cooke said.

He said the term "trade" referred more to men than women and did not include the many
unions the body represented such as nurses, clerks, public servants and dental therapists.

"It is a change to reflect the fact we are in WA and are the most representative peak
body in Australia," Mr Cooke said.

Vic: Police remove barricaded glass workers

MELBOURNE, Dec 30 AAP - Police today removed 20 workers who had barricaded themselves
inside an ACI glass moulding plant in Melbourne's east as part of an enterprise bargaining
dispute, a union said.

The firm yesterday morning locked the workforce out of its Box Hill plant for at least
a month, the second lockout of the past week, the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union
(AMWU) said.

But 20 dayshift workers were left inside the plant.

AMWU spokesman Peter Gibbons said police removed the barricaded workers early this
morning in a peaceful operation negotiated with the union.

He said the firm's tough approach was unhelpful and that the workers were determined to fight on.

"The workers decided they needed to make it quite clear to the company that they don't
believe that the lockout will solve the issue," Mr Gibbons told ABC radio.

The Federal Court last Friday ordered the reinstatement of the workers after ACI stood
them down nine days earlier.

Justice Alan Goldberg then ruled that the lockout notice by ACI was invalid and had no effect.

The AMWU, of which the 83 workers are members, has accused the company of attempting
to intimidate workers to seek concessions in an enterprise bargaining dispute.

Qld: Moves on super fund would be wrong says mining council

The Queensland Mining Council says any attempt to use the coal industry's long service

legally and morally wrong.

The 125 Oakdale miners in New South Wales lost $6.3 million in entitlements owed to them

The miners, with the backing of the ALP and the Democrats have called on the government to
use the $240 million long service leave fund to gain their money.

He says they'll contact the Democrats and the ALP tomorrow telling them it's legally and

It is difficult to estimate the damage being caused by illicit counterfeit diet pills that are marketed as "natural" solutions for weight loss, but conservative estimates from the Health Ministry's Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit say at least four people have been hospitalized so far.

"We know this is the tip of the iceberg," said Mickey Arieli, director of the PCU.
Arieli first became aware of the developing threat when he received a phonecall last October from a source informing of him an elderly woman who had been hospitalized after taking a pill that was presented by its sellers as a natural slimming agent.

The call led to a chain of events resulting in an international criminal investigation which, due to its ongoing sensitivity, cannot be described in any detail at this stage.

"I got to the hospital and took the pills for analysis," recalled Arieli.

The pills, called Slim Extreme, played havoc with the woman's cardiovascular system, causing her pulse rate and blood pressure to go through the roof.

The PCU encouraged the woman to file a complaint with police, leading to a joint PCU-Tel Aviv police investigation into the source of the pills. Officers from the Ayalon police subdistrict's serious crimes branch raided an address in Bat Yam, arresting a woman and seizing quantities of the Slim Extreme pills, as well as counterfeit Viagra tablets.

The investigation is continuing, and has taken on an international status.

IN THE meantime, Arieli is continuing to learn of the damage being caused by the pills.

"We've been receiving calls from all sorts of doctors from hospitals. A 20-year-old-woman displayed symptoms of psychosis after taking the pill. The same thing happened to a second 20-year-old woman who took the pills. And a 16-year-old suffered passing kidney failure," Arieli said.

"We know they are being smuggled into Israel and that they are causing serious damage to people's health. We are involved in an international investigation that is ongoing."

Irrespective of the results of that investigation, people can recognize counterfeit dangerous pills through a number of warning signs, Arieli said.

"We are warning that all diet supplements that have medical indications are forbidden. Food supplements are not supposed to have medical indication," he said.

Such indications "are the first sign that these ingredients can cause damage," he added. "I would advise everyone not to consume pills that come with those kinds of indications. I suspect they contain active pharmaceuticals."

Ordering pills from the Internet or over the phone is also unsafe, he said. People should only purchase pills from pharmacies and be sure they carry a Health Ministry seal of approval and Hebrew instructions.

OTHER DANGEROUS slimming pills, known as Amana Slim Care, are made in Lebanon and imported illegally.

"Just this week, my operational pharmacist [a member of the PCU] informed me that thousands of diet and energy pills made in Syria and Lebanon were smuggled into the West Bank via east Jerusalem. From the West Bank, they return to Israel," said Arieli.

Arieli, originally from Chicago, feels it is imperative for immigrants from English-speaking countries to be aware of the dangers, and called on anyone with doubts to contact him.

He set up the PCU in 2007, and has since joined forces with law enforcement agencies such as America's Food and Drug Administration to help fight counterfeit medicines, ringing the alarm bell about the dangers.

"We're only three people. That's a pretty small unit for the whole of Israel," he remarked.

The PCU's main goal is to work with police to track down dangerous pills and safeguard public health. PCU members and police conduct joint raids routinely, as occurred on Thursday when they discovered hundreds of counterfeit impotence pills in Shfaram.

"We build up cases together with the police," Arieli explained.

The PCU has identified a legal loophole which can allow some drugs to escape the Dangerous Drugs Act despite being very risky substances.

"We've found medicines that were supposed to be destroyed but were returned to pharmacies," he said.

The PCU is pushing for legal changes to make it easier to prohibit borderline substances. In the meantime, it relies on a law that prohibits negligent supply of dangerous materials that contain hazardous chemicals, which carries a maximum three-year penalty. "It's what we have to work with," Arieli said.

The PCU's alerts led police to raid kiosks and seize synthetic drugs that promise to create a cannabis-like high, but which pose a real risk to the health of users.

The PCU also works closely with Customs to try to stem the flow of the drugs.

"It's an industry that makes millions of dollars every year. In November, 230,000 counterfeit weight loss pills were seized at the port of Ashdod," Arieli said.

Those wishing to contact Arieli for more information, can reach him by e-mail at modein@eliav.health.gov.il or by fax at

Fed: LNP expels member over Obama 'monkey' comment

The Queensland Liberal National Party has expelled a member who called BARACK OBAMA
a "monkey" on Twitter .. during the US president's interview on ABC television last night.

The tweets .. from an account belonging to Griffith University medical student NICK
SOWDEN .. were posted during ABC TV's 7.30 Report with KERRY O'BRIEN.

In one of the tweets .. Mr SOWDEN wrote if he wanted to see a monkey on TV he'd watch
Wildlife Rescue.

LNP state director MICHAEL O'DWYER says the party doesn't tolerate such comments.

Mr SOWDEN says he's been notified of his expulsion via email .. following a snap meeting
of the LNP's president's committee.

The committee's decided Mr SOWDEN engaged in conduct bringing the party into disrepute
.. and in conduct severely harmful to the best interests of the party.

Mr SOWDEN's told AAP he isn't a racist person and the comments were meant as a political joke.

EDS clarifies in 5th par that it was a meeting of the president's committee, and adds
6th par detailing committee's findings
