WA: TLC changes name to Unions WA
PERTH, April 2 AAP - The West Australian Trades and Labor Council has changed its name
to UnionsWA in a move designed to modernise and clarify its public image.
UnionsWA secretary Tony Cooke said the newly named organisation reflected more closely
its role in representing working people.
He said the TLC suffered from a lack of clarity in its name and often received calls
from people wanting anything from the fitting of a screen door to official recognition
of overseas trade qualifications.
"UnionsWA is a more appropriate description of our core business," Mr Cooke said.
He said the term "trade" referred more to men than women and did not include the many
unions the body represented such as nurses, clerks, public servants and dental therapists.
"It is a change to reflect the fact we are in WA and are the most representative peak
body in Australia," Mr Cooke said.
