VIC:Nothing sinister about pageant, Geary says
Victoria's child safety commissioner says there was nothing sinister, unsafe or degrading
about the recent controversial children's beauty pageant in Melbourne.
BERNIE GEARY attended the pageant at the Northcote Town Hall last month at the request
of the government, and says it wasn't to his taste.
But in a letter to Minister for Children WENDY LOVELL, released today, he said his
overall impression of the event, attended by about 150 people, was one of people having
fun.
Mr GEARY says rather than getting an impression of overt sexuality, he witnessed adolescent
awkwardness.

It is difficult to estimate the damage being caused by illicit counterfeit diet pills that are marketed as "natural" solutions for weight loss, but conservative estimates from the Health Ministry's Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit say at least four people have been hospitalized so far.
"We know this is the tip of the iceberg," said Mickey Arieli, director of the PCU.
Arieli first became aware of the developing threat when he received a phonecall last October from a source informing of him an elderly woman who had been hospitalized after taking a pill that was presented by its sellers as a natural slimming agent.
The call led to a chain of events resulting in an international criminal investigation which, due to its ongoing sensitivity, cannot be described in any detail at this stage.
"I got to the hospital and took the pills for analysis," recalled Arieli.
The pills, called Slim Extreme, played havoc with the woman's cardiovascular system, causing her pulse rate and blood pressure to go through the roof.
The PCU encouraged the woman to file a complaint with police, leading to a joint PCU-Tel Aviv police investigation into the source of the pills. Officers from the Ayalon police subdistrict's serious crimes branch raided an address in Bat Yam, arresting a woman and seizing quantities of the Slim Extreme pills, as well as counterfeit Viagra tablets.
The investigation is continuing, and has taken on an international status.
IN THE meantime, Arieli is continuing to learn of the damage being caused by the pills.
"We've been receiving calls from all sorts of doctors from hospitals. A 20-year-old-woman displayed symptoms of psychosis after taking the pill. The same thing happened to a second 20-year-old woman who took the pills. And a 16-year-old suffered passing kidney failure," Arieli said.
"We know they are being smuggled into Israel and that they are causing serious damage to people's health. We are involved in an international investigation that is ongoing."
Irrespective of the results of that investigation, people can recognize counterfeit dangerous pills through a number of warning signs, Arieli said.
"We are warning that all diet supplements that have medical indications are forbidden. Food supplements are not supposed to have medical indication," he said.
Such indications "are the first sign that these ingredients can cause damage," he added. "I would advise everyone not to consume pills that come with those kinds of indications. I suspect they contain active pharmaceuticals."
Ordering pills from the Internet or over the phone is also unsafe, he said. People should only purchase pills from pharmacies and be sure they carry a Health Ministry seal of approval and Hebrew instructions.
OTHER DANGEROUS slimming pills, known as Amana Slim Care, are made in Lebanon and imported illegally.
"Just this week, my operational pharmacist [a member of the PCU] informed me that thousands of diet and energy pills made in Syria and Lebanon were smuggled into the West Bank via east Jerusalem. From the West Bank, they return to Israel," said Arieli.
Arieli, originally from Chicago, feels it is imperative for immigrants from English-speaking countries to be aware of the dangers, and called on anyone with doubts to contact him.
He set up the PCU in 2007, and has since joined forces with law enforcement agencies such as America's Food and Drug Administration to help fight counterfeit medicines, ringing the alarm bell about the dangers.
"We're only three people. That's a pretty small unit for the whole of Israel," he remarked.
The PCU's main goal is to work with police to track down dangerous pills and safeguard public health. PCU members and police conduct joint raids routinely, as occurred on Thursday when they discovered hundreds of counterfeit impotence pills in Shfaram.
"We build up cases together with the police," Arieli explained.
The PCU has identified a legal loophole which can allow some drugs to escape the Dangerous Drugs Act despite being very risky substances.
"We've found medicines that were supposed to be destroyed but were returned to pharmacies," he said.
The PCU is pushing for legal changes to make it easier to prohibit borderline substances. In the meantime, it relies on a law that prohibits negligent supply of dangerous materials that contain hazardous chemicals, which carries a maximum three-year penalty. "It's what we have to work with," Arieli said.
The PCU's alerts led police to raid kiosks and seize synthetic drugs that promise to create a cannabis-like high, but which pose a real risk to the health of users.
The PCU also works closely with Customs to try to stem the flow of the drugs.
"It's an industry that makes millions of dollars every year. In November, 230,000 counterfeit weight loss pills were seized at the port of Ashdod," Arieli said.
Those wishing to contact Arieli for more information, can reach him by e-mail at modein@eliav.health.gov.il or by fax at

a "monkey" on Twitter .. during the US president's interview on ABC television last night.
The tweets .. from an account belonging to Griffith University medical student NICK
SOWDEN .. were posted during ABC TV's 7.30 Report with KERRY O'BRIEN.
In one of the tweets .. Mr SOWDEN wrote if he wanted to see a monkey on TV he'd watch
Wildlife Rescue.
LNP state director MICHAEL O'DWYER says the party doesn't tolerate such comments.
Mr SOWDEN says he's been notified of his expulsion via email .. following a snap meeting
of the LNP's president's committee.
The committee's decided Mr SOWDEN engaged in conduct bringing the party into disrepute
.. and in conduct severely harmful to the best interests of the party.
Mr SOWDEN's told AAP he isn't a racist person and the comments were meant as a political joke.
EDS clarifies in 5th par that it was a meeting of the president's committee, and adds

FED: Turnbull says climate change vote disappointing
CANBERRA, Dec 2 AAP - Former opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull says the defeat of
Labor's emissions trading scheme is disappointing.
"This is a very disappointing result, contrary to the national interest and the interest
of the Liberal Party," Mr Turnbull wrote in his blog on Wednesday.
"Australia needs to get on with the business of cutting its greenhouse gas emissions."
Mr Turnbull returned to his familiar arguments about the Liberals having previously
supported an ETS.
"We recognised that in government and started legislating for an ETS.
"As Mr Howard has observed, the Rudd government's ETS is very similar to the one we,
as Liberals, took to the last election."
Mr Turnbull was deposed as Liberal leader on Tuesday and replaced by the right-wing Tony Abbott.

Fed: Rallying bugle sounds for women on Anzac Day
Australian women have stepped up to the plate in wartime for more than a century ..
now they're being urged to step out in the annual Anzac Day parades.
Women began serving their country during the Boer War in 1898 .. long before Australians
had heard of Gallipoli.
In World War One .. around two thousand women served in field hospitals and on board
medical ships.
By World War Two .. 60 thousand were serving in the army .. navy and air force.
As Australians prepare to observe the 94th Anzac Day around the country and around
the world .. the RSL says commemoration of women's efforts is long overdue.

NSW: Childs' fingers not severed, contrary to reports - inquest
SYDNEY, Dec 3 AAP - The inquest into the death of Sydney car saleswoman Rachelle Childs
has been told her fingers were not severed, contrary to some reports.
The body of the 23-year-old was exhumed for further testing last year, after some witnesses
at the inquest said they had heard one of her hands was severed.
But Deputy State Coroner Jane Culver was today told tests revealed damage to her left
hand was consistent with burning.
She also was told all of Ms Child's fingers were intact and there was no evidence of any cutting.
Ms Childs was last seen alive at the Bargo Hotel in Sydney's south-west on the evening
of June 7, 2001.
Her charred partially-clad body was found in roadside bushland near Gerroa on the NSW
south coast in the early hours of June 8.

BroadJump Expands International Presence With Key Customer Win in Latin America -- Telmex.
Business Editors & High-Tech Writers
AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 6, 2002
BroadJump, Inc., the leader in broadband software, today announced the addition of Telmex to its customer roster expanding the company's reach into Latin America.
Telmex, the leading telecommunications company in Mexico, has more than 13.9 million lines in service and 1.9 million data transmission-enabled lines.
Having secured more than 70 percent of the North American broadband market, BroadJump continues to grow its business abroad. In addition to its Latin American deployments, BroadJump also has successful customer relationships in Europe and Canada. BroadJump will assist Telmex in the roll out of its broadband service, and in making high-speed access more widely available for Mexican residents.
"Given broadband's nascent stage in Latin America, there is a tremendous opportunity and significant need for service providers to take a leadership position and deliver on the promise of broadband," said Juan Ignacio Fernandez, senior industry analyst at Gartner Dataquest. "Software solutions like BroadJump's are essential for service providers to accelerate the rollout of high-speed access and provide consumers with a positive broadband experience."
Informa Media Group predicts that the number of broadband households across the region will increase by a factor of 10 between 2002 and 2007. Additionally, Frost & Sullivan reports that high-speed access encourages Latin American buyers to spend more time on the Internet, hence giving them more exposure to products and services that can be purchased on-line. According to the report, music, videos and interactive games are just some of the features that are possible to access with a broadband connection, something that was impossible through traditional dial-up access.
"BroadJump's expansion into Latin America is a key milestone for the company as we continue to broaden our international scope beyond North America," said Kenny Van Zant, chief operating officer for BroadJump. "The decision by Telmex, one of Latin America's leading telecommunications providers, to select BroadJump's solutions, exemplifies our ability to meet the business and operational needs of Latin American service providers."
"Telmex is committed to continually discovering technology that will allow us to offer new and better services. BroadJump adds to this strategy in offering comprehensive solutions to our clients in advanced telecommunications services," said Arturo Elias Ayub, strategic alliances, communications and institutional relations director of Telmex.

IRAN - Feb. 8 - Montazeri Linked To Jailed Activists.(Brief Article)
In comments published by the traditionalist daily Kayhan, the head of the Special Theologians Court Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei says the household of dissident Ayatullah Hossein Ali Montazeri rendered "huge financial assistance" to seven people and the pro-Khatami Office to Foster Unity (the main reformist student group). He says the ayatullah's son, Saeed Montazeri, arrested several months ago, had written and distributed anti-revolutionary material. (Ayat. Montazeri, regarded as one of Iran's leading theologians, was put under house arrest in Qom in 1997 for challenging the credentials of Ayatullah Ali Khamen'i, the supreme leader closely associated with the conservatives. Ayat. Montazeri recently infuriated the establishment by publishing his memoirs on the internet. Analysts say the judge's allegations of anti-revolutionary activities, co-ordinated by the ayatullah's household and carried out by the new generation of "religious-nationalist" dissidents, could be the prelude to a more serious attempt to undermine Khatami before the June 8 presidential elections). Mohseni-Ejei says those recently arrested confessed to taking money to "destroy" ex-president Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani (who headed the conservatives list of candidates in parliamentary elections they lost conclusively a year ago). Speaking at the main theology college in the holy city of Qom, the judge names two jailed journalists, Akbar Ganji and Emadeddin Baqi, who probed political murders carried out in the 1990s while Rafsanjani was in office. (During his recent trial, Ganji implicated former ministers and judges, including Mohseni-Ejei, in the killings. They rejected the allegations). The judge accuses Ali Afshari, a student leader, and Ezatollah Sahabi, a veteran nationalist politician, of taking money. (Both disappeared inside Iran's prison system nearly two months ago).

Mar. 25 -- YOU HAVEN'T HEARD much about Furby lately, but he's still out there, lurking.
McDonald's is giving away mini Furbys with Happy Meals starting Friday.
Expect a repeat of the frenzy that came the past two springs when McDonald's gave away Teenie Beanie Babies: parents ordering Happy Meals by the dozen, throwing some away and making french fry casseroles with the rest. The Furbys will be given out through April 22, or as long as supplies last.
Furby, an artificially intelligent toy, was the hit of the 1998 holiday shopping season, with adults lining up at 3 a.m. to buy them, or paying up to $200 in auctions over the Internet.
Furby parent Tiger Electronics is doing its best to make sure Furby has staying power, producing different versions of Furby so people will want to collect them all. There are eight toys in 10 different body or color combinations, meaning collectors or speculators will want all 80 versions.
The McDonald's Furbys are not electronic, but some of them do make growling noises, wiggle their ears or move their feet.
The full-sized Furby is still popular, though not as hot as it was before Christmas. Over 5,000 sites were registered for Furby auctions with the eBay Internet site, down from 7,000 in early December. Many are already offering the McDonald's Furbys for sale. Are they real Mickey D. Furbys? Many of the so-called "rare" Furbys offered on eBay are frauds, altered versions of regular Furby.
Also popular are people who want to do physical harm to Furby, the talking toy known for its lack of an on-off switch.
There's a site where you can watch Furby be dissected (phobe.com), and even microwaved or have his ears pulled off so blood spurts out (look it up yourself).
So Furby stirs passions, which I'm sure is the way Tiger Electronics, a division of Hasbro, likes it. Tiger would like to make sure Furby isn't just a fad. So far the expert at avoiding obsolescence is Ty Inc., maker of Beanie Babies, which have been riding a wave of popularity for over five years. Ty owner Ty Warner is the reigning genius of collectibles. The secretive company is privately held, and Warner doesn't do interviews. But Warner sure is rich. Earlier this month, he paid $275 million to buy the Four Seasons, the tallest hotel in Manhattan. Room rates range from $515 to $10,000 a night.
But Beanie Babies show signs of cooling off. Prices were down 26 percent over the nine months leading up to this January, according to a Beanie Baby collector site, absolutebeanies.com. So Beanie Babie collectors might find cashing in their prized collections can't even buy them a night in Ty Warner's hotel.
ALONZO MOURNING, MANUTE Bol, Mark McGwire, Luciano Pavarotti, and Tom Arnold are among their customers.
The store: Rochester Big & Tall, which caters to men who are either tall or, uh, large, usually around the mid-section.
The store opened earlier this month at Loehmann's Fashion Island shopping center, at Biscayne Boulevard and NE 187th Street in Aventura. Prices for suits range from $300 to about $1900, and 90 percent of the customers buy off the rack, said company president Bob Sockolov.
Rochester Big & Tall is a privately held company, founded in 1906, and based in San Francisco. This is only the 19th store, and its first in Florida. The company has no plans to build other stores in South Florida, Sockolov said.
Niche retailing is becoming a trend as the clothing industry grows more competitive. Locally, Exit Shops has opened Grand Exit for large-sized women.
Here's a question for you: the department catering to small women is called "petite." I don't think men would go for being called petite. So what would you call a clothing store that caters to short and skinny men? One of my colleagues suggests, "scrappy." So how about a new chain, Miramar Short 'n Scrappy?

AMC Communications Signs $55 Million Agreement With Lucent Technologies to Deliver Voice and Data Over DSL.
Business & Technology Editors
MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 2000
Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) and AMC Communications (AMC), a digital local exchange carrier (DLEC) based in New Orleans, La., today announced a $55 million agreement under which AMC will purchase Lucent's leading-edge data networking equipment to deliver the highest quality integrated Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) services to its business customers.
Lucent will supply AMC with its revolutionary Internet Protocol (IP)-based PathStar(TM) Access Server and the recently launched DSL access concentrator, Stinger(TM). AMC will deploy the Lucent solution to deliver feature-rich voice services, as well as high-speed data and Internet access over DSL. This deployment will allow AMC to offer service in every one of the 37 local calling regions in the states of Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, Florida and Mississippi by the end of the year 2000.
"Lucent's DSL technology will allow AMC to offer multiple phone lines and high-speed Internet access simultaneously over a single copper pair," said Ashok Dhawan, general manager, Lucent Technologies InterNetworking Systems. "AMC will be able to cost-effectively provide a full range of high-quality, high-speed voice, data and Internet services to its customers."
"The combined PathStar(TM) and Stinger(TM) solution will enable us to take advantage of the exploding DSL opportunity," said Mike Henry, CEO of AMC Communications. "Lucent's solution will help us rapidly expand our network, from an initial five-state deployment to our eventual goal of covering every local calling region in 21 states across the United States."
AMC has filed to offer services out of 200 locations in five states and has already engineered an additional 600 locations with Lucent equipment for the future phases of network deployment.
The Lucent Solution
The Bell Labs-developed PathStar(TM) Access Server combines with Stinger(TM) and a variety of packet-based integrated access devices to deliver the most feature-rich, packet-based voice over DSL solution in the market today.
By integrating local loop termination, a Class 5 telephony system, a voice-over-IP gateway and an edge router into one single network element, PathStar(TM) significantly lowers costs, saves precious central office space and reduces the complexity of integrated data and voice over DSL service delivery.
Stinger(TM) delivers all flavors of DSL--ADSL, SDSL, HDSL2 and IDSL--from one single platform. Stinger(TM) leads the industry in scaleability, capacity and redundancy. With its Quality of Service (QoS) features, it also enables service providers to deliver differentiated classes of service to their customers.
AMC Communications
AMC Communications, headquartered in New Orleans, LA, is among a new breed of digital local exchange carriers (DLECs), that provide business voice and data bundled solutions. AMC is a voice over IP (VoIP) solutions provider that utilizes DSL technologies and unbundled network elements on the "last mile connection." AMC is currently offering services in Louisiana and Mississippi, with anticipated expansion into twenty-one states by the close of 2001. UBS Launches Two Internet IPO Exchange Traded Notes.
Two ETRACS Linked to the UBS Internet IPO Index Comprised of Twenty Social Networking, Internet Software and Internet Services Stocks
NEW YORK -- UBS Investment Bank announced that today is the first day of trading on the NYSE Arca for two ETRACS Exchange Traded Notes (the "Internet IPO ETNs") linked to the performance of the UBS Internet IPO Index (the "Index"). Investors now have the ability to gain either unleveraged or leveraged exposure to a portfolio of Internet-related companies that have gone public within the last three years, all by way of two, convenient exchange-traded securities.
Both Internet IPO ETNS are linked to a unique benchmark index that currently consists of twenty holdings representing the latest generation of Internet-related stocks such as LinkedIn, HomeAway, Pandora Media and OpenTable. Innovative index construction allows for the addition of new Internet-related companies within weeks after their IPOs, and a monthly Index rebalancing feature and 3-year age limit ensure that the companies in the Index remain up-to-date and relevant.
The ETRACs Internet IPO ETN (Ticker: EIPO) provides exposure to the performance of the Index, while the Monthly 2xLeveraged ETRACS Internet IPO ETN (Ticker: EIPL) provides a monthly compounded two times leveraged exposure to the performance of the Index.
"There's a tremendous amount of investor interest in the current generation of Internet-related companies," said Christopher Yeagley, Managing Director and US Head of Equity Structured Products. "And now investors have a convenient way to access these stocks in a transparent, low-cost, exchange-traded product. Moreover, as new Internet-related companies go public, investors in these ETNs will gain exposure to them within weeks after their IPOs, provided they meet certain market capitalization and other eligibility requirements."
About the Index
The UBS Internet IPO Index (NYSE ticker symbol "NETIPO") is intended to measure, on a total-return basis, the performance of a subset of Internet-related companies listed on the NYSE or NASDAQ that satisfy specified market capitalization and other eligibility requirements. The Index provides exposure specifically to those Internet-related companies that have been publicly traded for less than three years. Standard & Poor's Financial Services LLC serves as the calculation agent for the Index. The top 10 holdings in the Index, as of July 7, 2011, are as follows:

GCC to retire its customary tariffs.
Provided by 7DAYS.ae
The GCC plans to end its current customs system and may replace it with a simpler one, a UAE official has said. The six nations plan to end the customs system in use, which charges import duty for the country of final destination. The new replacement system will be in place and all issues concerning a GCC customs union will be completed by the end of this year, Saeed Khalifa Saeed Al Marri, deputy director general of the UAECOs federal customs authority, told Bloomberg yesterday. The customs union has been beset by problems that have stopped it from being fully implemented since it was first introduced in 2003. A proposed Gulf single currency is dependant upon the formation of a Gulf common market, which, in turn, relies on the successful implementation of the customs union.C[pounds sterling]It took some time to understand the concept of customs union for both governments and traders,C[yen] said Al Marri. C[pounds sterling]There has been huge progress. We are using the same tariff, and we are using the same point of entry for everyone.C[yen]The customs union stipulates that goods coming into the GCC are charged at a consistent tariff of five per cent and can move around freely among the six member states. Under the current system, import duty is collected at the port of entry and is forwarded to the country of final destination. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Kuwait are backing a proposal to allow the country where the goods arrive to keep 95 per cent of the duty paid and distribute the remaining five per cent to the other GCC states based on a pre-determined formula, Al Marri said.

Use Any Domain Name? Yes ICANN.(Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers )
It was announced yesterday that the non-profit group which administers the internet domain name system, the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), has approved changes to relax the restrictions on the domain rules so as to allow registrants to use a wider range of domain names than those available. Currently there are 22 generic top level domain names, for example .com, and 250 or so country level domain names, for example .co.uk and .de
What does this mean?
The relaxation of the rules means that for 60 days from 12 January 2012, it will be possible for businesses and companies to apply for and buy URLs ending in their company or brand name. For instance, MacRoberts LLP could buy the ending .macroberts and use this instead of, or along with, www.macroberts.com At the end of this 60 day period, the application window for these tailored domain names will close for another three years.
Why is this significant?
It is important that all businesses are aware of this relaxation of the rules. Many will wish to consider making arrangements to put in place tailored domain names. Businesses should act early to protect their brands against so called "cyber squatters", who may attempt to buy up certain domain names in an attempt to hold them to ransom, as well as against anyone who may have an axe to grind with certain organisations.
This relaxation in the rules marks a significant step in the evolution of the internet, but it remains to be seen whether it will work well in practice. Although the proposed change could be seen as increasing marketing potential for businesses, it could lead to a number of confusing domain names appearing and, with there being a fixed fee of [pounds]114,000 for each application (a significant increase on the [pounds]15 registration fee for generic top level domain names), applying will come at a price.
The rather steep registration fee may, however, be seen as a means to dissuade certain individuals from registering fraudulent, malicious or frivolous domain names and the implications of the rule relaxation are not something that businesses should consider lightly.

Cisco Athletic Now Offering Free Quotes on Custom Team Uniforms.
Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) May 18, 2011
Purchasing custom team uniforms traditionally costs more money than most teams can afford. Cisco Athletic now offers free quotes and artist mock-ups on affordable products for all sports. The company recently expanded inventory to include many of today's unique sporting interests such as roller derby, flag football, and ultimate frisbee teams along with traditional baseball, basketball, and football offerings.
Not all custom jerseys are made for use on the sporting field, however, as Cisco Athletic staff receive a number of requests to produce jerseys for everyday use. In response to customer demand, the company recently produced a replica basketball jersey based on the One Tree Hill television program. All jerseys sold are manufactured and printed at the company factory in Baltimore from scratch according to customer dictated specifications.
When ordering sports uniforms on the Internet, customers find the design and sales staff do not have experience coaching or playing the sport. The Cisco Athletic staff differ in that all personnel have playing or coaching experience at numerous levels and will make recommendations on fabric and printing type based on expected frequency of play, climate, and other defined needs by the customer.
Wayne Capeletti, from Cisco Athletics, writes "Previously most of our business came from school athletic directors for basketball and football uniforms, but now many of our clients are sports hobbyists. Customers want to look professional and no longer settle for a shirts versus skins look on the playing field. It's exciting and fun."
Cisco eliminates the restriction many customers find when buying uniforms available only in limited color combinations, one method of decoration, or only one fabric. Clients may select from a large number of options via the online portal or request recommendations from site staff for the best combination for the intended use.
About Cisco Athletic:
Cisco Athletic opened in 1982 as a wholesale distributor, screen-printer and embroiderer of top-of-the-line athletic wear and sportswear. The initial customer base consisted primarily of schools, organizations and corporations in the Baltimore area. As business has expanded, the company has served customers farther and farther from home, but has kept producing custom uniforms in the Baltimore area to ensure the highest degree of quality for company clients.

Android and iPhone App Makes Smartphone Guides for Events Free and Simple.
PALO ALTO, Calif., May 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Large events have started offering mobile apps that help their participants find out where they should go and what they should do in real time. But these apps are often expensive to develop, making them inaccessible to smaller gatherings, and they are dependent on unreliable Internet connections.
Guidebook, Inc. (www.guidebookapp.com) offers event organizers a way to develop an easy-to-use, easy-to-update mobile event guide for a fraction of the cost. Guidebook offers a free basic service and allows clients to upgrade to premium services to fit the size and complexity of their events. And because the guide is stored directly on the smartphone, it still works even when the Internet is overloaded by crowds of people or unavailable.
Just three months old, Guidebook (originally called the Conventionist) has made mobile guides for 50 events and already has 100 more lined up in the coming months. Because of its unique, cost-effective design, Guidebook has been able to create guides for gatherings of all sizes, from a few hundred participants to tens of thousands. On May 3, their guide is being used at the WIRED Business Conference, attended by top executives from some of the nation's most successful companies and headlined by Bill Gates.
"Offering a guide for smartphones is quickly becoming a must-have for events," said Guidebook CEO Jeff Lewis. "Event organizers are finding that it no longer makes sense to rely solely on printed schedules and maps that are expensive to create, difficult to update when information changes at the last-minute, and impossible to integrate with interactive features and social media."
Although the company began by specializing in guides for conferences, their platform allows them to create guides for any type of organization, even those who operate year-round. Clients have hired them to build interactive smartphone guides for museums, universities, and community centers.
For events, Guidebook puts everything a participant needs in one place. Attendees can see the most up-to-date schedule of events, a list of exhibitors and their locations, and maps of the premises. They can set up a personalized schedule with reminders of the events they want to attend and a to-do list. And the guide allows users to monitor the buzz around the meetings with one-touch access to the Twitter stream, and a rating system that allows them to see which events are the most popular.
"As a volunteer who has a day job in addition to organizing an annual event, I appreciated how easy it was to set up everything for our guide," said Barbara Nelson, who coordinated a Silicon Valley conference for product managers. "The attendees loved the convenience of having the session schedule at their fingertips, as well as the ability to create their own schedules. And being able to monitor the Twitter feed was an added bonus."
Guidebook makes it simple to create a guide for any event. The event host simply has to enter their map, schedule of offerings, and descriptions of offerings into an intuitive, non-technical online form and the guide is up and running within minutes. If information needs to be updated, the host simply changes it online and the guide updates almost instantaneously and sends a message to participants. And when a wireless signal is available, attendees can easily update the guide with any new information at the push of a button.
About Guidebook, Inc.
Guidebook, Inc. provides organizations of all kinds the ability to easily and inexpensively create a mobile guide. Guidebook was founded in 2011 and is headquartered in Palo Alto, CA.
